About Us

Our story

The best way to answer this question is to revisit a brief history of the Sudan and challenging events of the early 1980s. On May 16th, 1983, a civil war broke out between Southern Sudan and Northern Sudan.

Although the challenges of a new home were enormous

They didn’t stop from working hard to achieve one of the pillars of the American dream, the education. Most of them went on to schools and earned the highest possible colleges degrees in various fields. And today, our community has grown from just few young men to families and kids. While we achieved many things in our community / or our new home for that matter, we realized that a targeted mentorship program (both kids and some parents), jobs, housing, and other family support services are of great need in our community.

Chol Dhoor
Executive Director 
Chol received his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and a minor in Global Studies from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. He was also a McNair Scholar where his research focused on the “The Rise of Detroit Auto Industry.” He examined the roles of technological change and related “spilled overs" in the United States. On the sideline of this research, he also conducted an independent study on “Money Laundering and financial institutions” where he studied its direct links to power...

 

Sarah
Sarah Adhieu
Co-Director for Finance

Sarah is a Co-Directors for Finance. She is primarily responsible for overseeing the foundation and community bank account and related financial transactions. She also helps in the management of foundation budget and implementation of financial policies. She is also responsible for filing monthly reports and safe keeping of all confidential financial records. She serves as the Chair of the Finance Committee.

Sanna Kuku
Vice Executive Director
Wanna is an Assistant Executive Director who coordinates all community events and related operations. She has served and provided strong leadership in our community since she first arrived in Vermont with her family. In addition to her role as an Assistant Executive Director, she is also the Vice Chairperson of the Sudanese Community in Vermont. In this role, she manages community budget and approves all related spending. She is also a Strategic Officer who  identifies

Rachel Perras

Mentors and Recruitment Manager 

Rachel grew up in East Texas and Winooski Vermont. She currently lives in Burlington. She graduated from Champlain with a B.S in Social Work and Psychology in 2011. Upon graduating from college, she worked first as a behavioral interventionist then eventually as a counselor at one of the Vermont’s important community organizations. She currently works as a Case Manager for a local nonprofit that focuses on children and families. She manages all aspects of family assistance and handles a caseload of over 400 clients. Her hobbies include many outdoor activities, weight lifting, working out, and spending time with her family.

Patricia Abui
Director of Community Events
 She is also the Chairperson for Sudanese Women Council in Vermont  and community Chief Events Coordinator. She has an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts from the New England Culinary Institute.

Under her capable umbrella, she coordinates all community fundraising, national celebrations and other related community operations that bring families and kids together.

Amal Kori
Co-Director for Finance
Amal is one of our Co-Directors for Finance. She plays very important roles in overseeing all financial transactions of the foundation and community bank accounts. She also helps in the management of foundation and community budget and ensures correct financial policies are followed and recorded. She assist in filing monthly reports and maintenance of all confidential records. She serves as the Co-Chair of the Finance Committee.

Garang Kuek

Director of Community Programs & Planning  

Garang Kuek graduated from Lyndon State College with a degree in Business Administration. He is a Director of Community Programs and Planning, a newly created positions to oversee and evaluate community programs, social events and related operations. Garang brings to this position a timely set of skills under several community leaderships. He also serves as a ranking board member. He previously served as a community Chief Treasurer where he exemplified strong leadership in planning, budgeting, spending and maintenance of community records. These skills would be vital to this new role.

He is also credited for being one of the first Sudanese to arrive in Vermont. He helped in hosting his fellow Sudanese who resettled from many years in refugee camp since his arrival in Vermont. Regular stories in simple setting also highlighted his roles in providing rides to his fellow brothers who joined him shortly after his arrival from the camp.He currently works in the Burlington area and loves to spend time with friends, watch sport games, visits family regularly in South Sudan. He loves to serve and help others in need.
